Mavis says, ‘I paint to keep hold of my sense of connection to this place which is my home.

This connection is strengthened with every paint stroke. My goal is to capture the way that light reveals a place and to share with the viewer, a sense of connection to the land, people, boats and even the animals around us.’

Through pleinair painting, studio painting, and teaching Mavis has found an immense affinity and love for Galway.

I’m originally from New York, where I studied Art Education and Illustration at the School of Visual Arts before working as an art teacher in NYC. When I later moved to Ireland and built a successful business, I still felt something was missing. As a creative, I knew I was out of balance—I needed art back in my life to truly feel at home. It wasn’t until I picked up my paintbrush again that I found harmony with my surroundings. That connection to place has become a vital part of my work.

I’m always learning, growing, and finding inspiration from others, and my practice continues to evolve. I paint both in the studio and en pleinair, drawing energy from nature and the landscapes around me. My paintings have found homes in private collections across Ireland, Europe, and the United States.

Mavis,  becoming an artist. For as long as I can remember, people would say to me, “Art is your hobby—but what are you really going to do?” Believing the misconception that I couldn’t actually be an artist, I tried on many different hats. I spent over six years teaching art full-time in schools and later ran my own business for nine years. In doing so, I drifted further from my own art and, little by little, away from myself.

But the “artist me” never truly disappeared—she kept nudging her way back in. After many years of detours, I finally returned to painting for good, and it felt like coming home. The truth is, I’ve always been an artist at heart, with a bit of teacher and businesswoman woven in along the way.

My focus and drive: 

I focus on capturing the beauty of Galway—its landscapes, seascapes, buildings, and boats. Some of my favorite places to paint include Kinvara, Thoor Ballylee, Coole Park, and the Gort River. Each piece is rooted in a deep connection to place, and I’ve had the joy of creating numerous commissioned works that hold special meaning for their owners.

Alongside my own painting practice, I love sharing the creative journey with others. I teach painting classes in my home studio in South Galway, as well as public and private plein air sessions. I offer adult classes, workshops for young artists (ages 10+), and tailored workshops for individuals, small groups, or groups of up to 12.
